THE USE OF FIELDWORK IN TEACHING GEOGRAPHY IN SELECTED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN BONO REGION
Abstract:
ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to investigate the use of fieldwork in teaching Geography in senior high schools within the Bono region. To achieve the purpose, the study was guided by four research questions. The study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. The questionnaire was used to collect data from 152 respondents comprising 102 Geography students and 50 Geography teachers. Census and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the sample. Data processing was done using SPSS version 21, and the analytical tools used were descriptive statistics using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Findings from the study showed that fieldwork is rarely employed in the teaching of Geography within senior high schools. Again, it was found that fieldwork is beneficial to students, to teachers, and to the subject of Geography. Furthermore, it was found that there are a lot of challenges in conducting fieldwork yet there are also ways on how fieldwork could be integrated into the teaching and learning of Geography. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the government in partnership with curriculum developers should factor fieldwork in Geography at the senior high school level. Secondly, the Bono Regional Education Service should organize workshops and seminars for headmasters/headmistresses, teachers, parents, and school administrators on the importance of fieldwork in teaching and learning so that they can support it. Finally, it was recommended that the Bono regional Education Service should reduce the workload on Geography teachers to help them have adequate time to organize fieldwork.
